Poetry in motion

Tom
Last Friday I spent time at my daughters school again.
This time we had to write a poem using the words they had painted before.
I had no idea how this would work. We sat outside in a small group, I showed them a few examples of poetry and then...well...the kids lead the way. We brain stormed around their 3 chosen words and I was so amazed and moved by the results. This painting is one on my favs and I really encouraged them to keep the writing as loose as the painting.
I'll collect the poems at some point and share here later.
So lovely to see children who thought they couldn't write produce such wonderful words.

I'm sending these to arty folk in the UK, canada, USA, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Japan! I get 10 cards sent to me from...who knows where?
There's 280 swoppers participating. Look at this beautiful one. and this one. Can't wait to see what arrives through my letter box...

Poetry and paint

poetry and paint at my daughters school

Here's pics of the work I'm doing with my daughters school for the Tagore poetry festival.
Firstly we looked at a list of around 100 words and acted them out physically. Then each child chose 3 words and painted how the words felt to them. We will then create a poem.
We are also making a life size papier mache cow, which we'll cover with poetry.
It was such fun and great to get the kids doing really big messy paintings outside (in the sun!) Some of the words chosen by kids that have been ill were very moving.

I have the thatchers in to re-ridge my roof. (it needs to be done every 10 years or so)
Such a joy to watch this craft. And Dave the main thatcher was in a rock band in the 70's!

and also...

I lent a friend and fabby photographer Sarah Lauren a few of my old bottles. I dug these up in the woods as a teenager. How glamorous she'd made them look!

The lovely Kerry from theseventytree blog was lucky enough to have her little boys room in 'my egg' a french magazine. Check out the rest of her bog for perfect style and art ideas.
It's very hard to see, it's in the top left corner, but an important message for any child to have on their wall! Beware of those tricksters!

Tagore Festival

DON'T LIMIT A CHILD TO YOUR OWN LEARNING
FOR HE WAS BORN OF ANOTHER TIME

The real Tagore
Jane as Tagore
I'm fortunate enough to have Dartington Hall on my door step. This year there is a celebration of the indian poet Tagor. He came to Dartington in the 1930's sharing his words and vision. He shunned violence and trusted the power of Art. He also had some great views on how to free up the eduction of our children. There is also a poetry festival at Sharpham organised by local poet Alice Oswald.
With my daughters school I'm creating Art, poetry and a life sized cow. I'm also planning the decorations at the poetry festival. So far my idea for the children to all wear Tagore style beards, as modeled rather fetchingly by myself above, has gone down well.
(His beard is apparently held in the Dartington hall archives!)
I'll post more of our creations for this exciting project soon...

I thought I'ld share the 'tweeks' publishers want sometimes. I delivered the artwork for my latest book and the powers that be decided to get rid of the large pattern areas. They were worried that it detracts fro the characters, which is a fair comment. I also didn't show such large areas on the sample work I sent in, so on reflection it was a bit of a gamble. See label below to view same pic with pattern.

Once again a new fridge must wait as I couldn't resist this print by Nathalie Lete.

Some of my rhyming books for Gullane Children's books also get published into board books. Here's the latest and my mini shoe collection. They were all worn by my daughter. (Not the dolls ones, she was never that small!)
